In the short term, anxiety can increase the response of the immune system. However, prolonged anxiety can have the opposite effect.

When you feel anxious, stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline are released which can affect other parts of your body. This puts your body in fight or flight mode.

Cortisol (a steroid hormone produced by cholesterol in the two adrenal glands found in each kidney) prevents the release of substances that cause inflammation, and kills aspects of the immune system that fight infection, then damages the body’s natural immune response.

This condition allows people with chronic anxiety disorders to catch colds and infections easily.

Then, you also have the potential to experience digestive problems because cortisol blocks the digestive process and causes people to lose their appetite, nausea, diarrhea, and stomach feelings.

This condition does not rule out making you at risk of irritable bowel syndrome.

When experiencing anxiety, the hippocampus can shrink and affect memory. The hippocampus is the part of the brain that is most responsible for forming new memories.

The long-term negative effects of anxiety disorders are depression, insomnia, chronic pain, loss of interest in sex, disorders of substance abuse, suicidal thoughts, and difficulties in school, work, and the social environment.
